Roads in Mexico vary in quality, with the standards of many connecting highways and new roads being very high, but those in more rural and out of the way regions being covered in potholes and hard to traverse. Bus and coach services through the country are comprehensive, cheap and (sometimes) comfortable, and provide the most popular way of getting around Mexico with the minimum of fuss – for a bit of extra coin, a first class coach can be booked, which is well worth it for long trips. Taxis operate from all towns in the country and fares can vary a great deal – it is wise to agree on a fee before travelling or to insist the meter is used, where available. Public transport in Mexico City offers a metro service as well as tram and trolleybus services, meaning it’s easy enough to get wherever one needs to get within the city. Mexico used to have a fantastic network of trains, but these services have been cut back quite severely in recent years. Whilst passenger services are still available and provide reasonable fares and decent amounts of comfort, the main use for trains recently has been for touristic purposes. A well-maintained network of internal flights operate through the country, and travel can prove affordable and very quick for those in a hurry. Flights are also available for chartering. There are regular ferry services to all of Mexico’s offshore lands, and these ships offer cheap, reliable transport and some lovely views whilst travelling.
